Dielectric loss tester, also known as dielectric loss tester or tanδ tester

is an important device used to evaluate the electrical performance of insulating materials. It mainly judges the quality of insulation by measuring the energy loss of dielectrics (such as transformer oil, cable insulation, etc.) under AC voltage. This test is crucial for ensuring the normal operation of various electrical equipment in the power system, because the decline in insulation performance is often an early warning signal of potential faults.

Testing Principle

Dielectric loss testing is based on the analysis of the behavior of insulating materials in an alternating electric field. Specifically, when an AC voltage is applied to an insulating material, due to the polarization effect and the presence of conductivity inside the material, a certain amount of energy loss will occur. This loss usually appears in two forms: one is the active power loss caused by the rearrangement of dipoles; the other is the energy consumption caused by leakage current. The dielectric loss tangent (tanδ) is a key parameter to measure this loss, which represents the tangent of the phase difference between the total current and an ideal lossless capacitor.

Main Functions

Measurement of dielectric loss factor: directly reflects the insulation quality of the tested object; the larger the value, the worse the insulation performance.

Capacitance measurement: simultaneously obtains the capacitance information of the sample, which helps to fully understand its electrical characteristics.

Automatic calibration: some advanced models support automatic calibration function, simplifying the operation process and improving measurement accuracy.

Data recording and analysis: can store a large amount of test data and provide trend analysis functions, facilitating long-term monitoring of insulation status changes.

Portable design: modern dielectric loss testers are often designed to be more compact and lightweight, convenient for field use.

Application Fields

Power system maintenance: regularly inspect the insulation status of high-voltage equipment such as transformers, instrument transformers, and generators to prevent accidents.

Manufacturing quality control: conduct strict quality inspections on raw materials and finished products during the production process to ensure product quality meets standard requirements.

Scientific research experiments: study the electrical properties of new materials and explore new methods to improve insulation technology.

Fault diagnosis: quickly locate partial discharge or other insulation defects in power equipment.

Development Trends

With the advancement of technology, dielectric loss testers are also constantly evolving. For example, some of the latest instruments adopt digital signal processing technology and intelligent algorithms, improving anti-interference capability and measurement accuracy; some devices integrate wireless communication modules, allowing test results to be uploaded to cloud platforms in real time for remote monitoring and data analysis. In addition, to adapt to a wider range of testing needs, manufacturers are also striving to develop multifunctional integrated solutions, enabling a single device to meet the requirements of multiple testing tasks.

In summary, as one of the key tools to ensure the safe and stable operation of the power system, the dielectric loss tester plays an indispensable role in the power industry and related fields. With the development of technology, its application scope and technical level will continue to expand and improve.
